While in Leavenworth, we drove by this unusually shaped building...one I had to shoot. No sign identified its purpose. A ramp runs down toward the pond. Also, a cable extends out over the pond. The building has two levels....hmmmmm very strange....
It is almost designed to look like Noah's Ark. This is a beautiful setting for it.

@Luke Wiley: David got this email from the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce: The barn pictured below, is out on Ski Hill and Ranger Road, it is the location of our beer wagon and the horses that pull the wagon, thus the reason for the big ramp on the barn. If you go to www.projektbayern.com you will see the wagon and the tails of the horses. And if you come over for our Autumn Leaf Festival the end of September, or our Oktoberfest the first 3 Friday and Saturday’s in October you will see them in person. As well as you can go out and see the barn for yourself!
Thank you for contacting the Leavenworth Chamber.
obviously they're hiding an alien battleship, what else?

Good morning Don,
it reminds me something about the holidays in Bavaria. The mountains in the background and also the building. Below the building, the flowers at the window, suggests. The upper half could be a storage chamber, for grain or other purposes. The pond before it can all seem very harmonious, as well as the overall view. It is a very interesting and beautiful picture. It acts very much alive and, above all, not alone and abandoned. I like it very much. For that I give you 5 stars ***** This weekend I leave any comments and post any new pictures. I am currently busy with other things. More on the weekend in an e-mail. I wish you a nice weekend and all the best. Dear greetings Christel

23 Jul 2010 8:56am
It's a great shape whatever it is and the roof-line is reflected in the mountains. Nicely seen Don.
23 Jul 2010 9:31am
Very suitable shape in this setting. Isn't it a storage room for hay or something on the top level and place for cows or something on the bottom level?? Beautiful whatever it is :-)
23 Jul 2010 9:45am
Now this is one I would love to know the details about! I love the photograph itself, but my curiosity sure is up!
23 Jul 2010 10:42am
What an interesting structure. Love how the roof forms echo those of the distant mountains.
23 Jul 2010 11:56am
The shape of the barn looks beautiful..and it looks huge! What on earth they could
use it for..no idea:)) Unsolved untill now, hope soon you find out! Great shot!

23 Jul 2010 1:50pm
What a very beautiful place & strange warehouse i think ! isn't it
23 Jul 2010 2:35pm
What are they cooking up in Leavenworth? They've got a picturesque building and locale to do it. Great shot of this mystery building.
23 Jul 2010 3:03pm
A beautiful shot with excellent light and colors. The composition is just perfect. I love how the mountains stack up, the pond in the foreground, the row of trees on the left. The building is a mystery but so beautiful in those colors and its unique shape. One thinks of a gondola, but it doesn't seem like those rails are narrow enough for the opening. Fascinating.
23 Jul 2010 3:08pm
Superb shot of this intriguing building, and the beautiful coutryside Maybe Luke is right and there building an Ark in there
23 Jul 2010 3:21pm

23 Jul 2010 7:42pm
23 Jul 2010 8:00pm
And you didn't even mention the outsloping walls and the dual cupolas! Clearly a barn of some kind, but that deoesn't answer many of the questions. Good spot, Don.
23 Jul 2010 8:17pm
Oh, this is so beautiful, just amazing scenery. The scale of your building here
is perfect to compete with the mountains.
23 Jul 2010 8:20pm
I have no idea what this is? But I know its a good photo!
23 Jul 2010 8:25pm
Amazing photo Don!! Seems like a foreign country. No idea what this building is but it sure is cool!!
24 Jul 2010 12:27am
Wow, that's a strange building ! Perhaps, it's a top secret lab ;)
Love the background landscape, the pond and tall grass in the foreground also look beautiful.
24 Jul 2010 12:29am
looks like a barn with a home under it, as strange as that would be, or its area 31, a pre existing site that was devoloped before area 51..
24 Jul 2010 12:38am
"What is it?" That's just what I was saying to myself before I saw your title. Very strange. Would cows go up a ramp like that? Or maybe it's for equipment. Strange.
24 Jul 2010 1:41am
Whatever it is, that is a magnificent shot with the mountains as a backdrop.
24 Jul 2010 3:42am
The Comments here are as enjoyable as the image, Don ! I sure agree it all has an Alpine look to it.
24 Jul 2010 9:15am
I love Leavenworth - it's such a fun place to go. I haven't been in several years, so maybe a trip up there this summer is called for. I've yet to run across this fantastic barn, though.
26 Jul 2010 3:46am
oh! a beer wagon barn! that's pretty unusual.. looks quite charming too.. nicely captured.. :)
28 Jul 2010 3:43am
i know this is way too late for an explanation, but i joined aminus3 only recently. so, here we go! here in austria and in bavaria, above all in the western parts (salzburg, tyrol, ...) this shape is quite common for a combination of barn and cowshed/cow-barn. the lower part (in your picture, the whitewashed part) serves as the cowshed, where the milking takes place and where the cow are fed. some farmers also used to keep a few hogs there as well, for their own meat supply. "upstairs" is for storing hay as fodder for the long winter months, when the cattle cannot be outside. the ramp allowed the hay wagons to drive directly into the barn for unloading. as leavenworth calls itself a "bavarian" village, it is only right that they should have such a barn, too!
