Leavenworth was officially incorporated on September 5, 1906. The city struggled until 1962, when a Committee was formed to transform the city into a mock Bavarian village to revitalize its economy. Leavenworth's annual Oktoberfest celebration is claimed to be one of the most attended in the world outside Munich, Germany. The city celebrates Christmas with a spectacular lighting of the town. "Village of Lights" runs December through mid January with the initial lighting on the first Saturday in December... Saturday at dusk everyone gathers to sing "Silent Night" and witness the lighting of the village as it is transformed into a magical wonderland of lights.
