Runaway Ramp - Unusual Sunday

On highway 195 descending into Lewiston, Idaho, the highway is a steep downhill 7% grade for 7 miles. This constitutes a distinct hazard to truckers whose heavily loaded trucks can experience brake failure resulting in a runaway truck. Idaho has built four runaway truck ramps on this 7 miles filled with deep, very soft sand which can arrest the most heavily loaded truck. The runaway ramp shown in this picture is downhill, but several are located so they swerve off the road uphill. One such uphill ramp is in view farther down the hill. While brake failures are rare, when they occur these 'lifesavers' are a very welcome sight!
