Runaway Truck Ramps

A runaway truck is a scary thought!

that is a nice safety ramp, the ones near me are dirt / sand surface with sandstone walls (carved out of the sandstone, doh) and they look like they just get narrower as it ascends, i assume the semi just gets wedged in there...

At least it hasn't been used recently.

This is something you don't see every day, that's for sure. What a concept, though it is truly valuable. A part of the price we pay for building transportation routes through difficult terrain. Excellent shot, Don.

Glad to see Animus3 back up. In this day of "a seperate charge for everything" it is not surprising that a trucker would think twice about incurring a fine.

We have many similar ramps in the mountains of NC. I always thought it would be some kind of ride to hit one of those things at speed in an 18-wheeler. :-)

We have those here in northern AZ, too. I've always been worried I'll be in front of a runaway truck, not fun.

Imagine giving someone a fine to avoid an accident? I saw many of these too while traveling out west.....I always imagined one flying up one of those to stop.....phew!

I love the humour...we have those signs too. The first time I saw one, my imagination just went haywire...as if the truck ran-away deliberately, and had to go up those steep ramps, just for the fun of it, how droll! I'm sure you get it! I love the light in this shot and all the yellow. :OD

I somehow missed this--think I have seen something about these ramps somewhere else. I bet truckers are glad to make it to the bottom on some of those roads.

i've seen numerous runway truck ramps here in the mountains, but fortunately they all looked as is they had never been used ... still, it's comforting to know they're there when they're needed ...

These ramps are fascinating but, I hope I never see one being used. A runaway truck that might weigh over 100,000 pounds is a scary thought indeed.

life/death or a fine? i'd choose the fine.. but yeah, these are lifesavers for some of those truckers.. nice capture.. :)

They added those signs about no fines for ramp use AFTER a truck lost his brakes and refused to use a ramp because he thought he'd get a big ticket- and landed at the bottom of the hill in the state police building. Amazing the stupidity of some people. It's people like that who make my profession look bad.
