Spring RunoffPosted by Slackwater - don (spokane, United States) on 18 April 2009 in Landscape & Rural. The spring thaw produces temporary streams in the normally dry stream beds on the Turnbull Game Preserve. Even the wetland ponds and sloughs tend to dry toward the fall and spend the winter empty. This is a typical of the scabland areas -a land surface that is essentially flat and underlain by thick and extensive basalt flows, with only a thin soil cover.
