Shed?

Posted by Slackwater - don (spokane, United States) on 17 April 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

Near the horse barn of several days ago, we spotted this shed/barn. I thought I must add it to my growing collection of farm buildings. It was situated in a pasture all by itself. The design of the building with its ladder to an upper level and an apparent extension on the back suggested some kind of feeding shed. I wondered if the long window provided weather-protected hay for horses. Perhaps you have an alternate suggestion.

What a wonderful old structures. It must date back into the 1800's. I wonder if it could have been an old store or something like that?

I must say, it is really very carefully built. They had to be very skillful hands to build something like this.

I do know that sheds that look amazingly similar to this one that I have seen in British Columbia were in fact hay sheds. You're correct that the wide opening on the sides and ends were for the cattle to access the feed in winter. So, I think this is one of them. I love the detail and clarity as usual in this image.

Hi Don, great looking storage shed..... dont know what would have been stored here though, just googled it (as this kind of thing interests me a lot) and found a couple of similar buildings, one was a hay storage the other was for wood storage. The opening for the hay was as you guessed, the opening for the wood storage is to let the wood dry out correctly....... dont know which is right, but the photo is awesome anyway. Great capture. Thanks for sharing.
