Record SnowfallPosted by Slackwater - don (spokane, United States) on 6 January 2009 in Documentary & Street. This one of the shots I took to document this record year of snowfall in the Spokane area. The total snowfall reported yesterday has now reached 77.7 inches (1.973m) The normal amount is around 44 inches (1.11m). The local news reported that 40 businesses have had their roofs collapse with numerous collapsed carports and sheds unreported. There is no place to put fresh snow which has been arriving at a rate of two snow storms a week. A moisture-laden front rolls in off the Pacific Ocean colliding with cold arctic air from the north with a heavy snowfall as a result. Schools were closed yesterday because of the dangerous walking conditions of snow-filled sidewalks making people walk in the clogged streets which cannot be fully cleared. This has been a very interesting experience to observe, but a difficult one to show in pictures. It is snowing again this morning.

k@ from Paris, FranceOmigod, my poor lil'flakes compared to that monster of snow !! :o) Great documentary you'll be happy to look at in some years ! 6 Jan 2009 3:49pm EYES WIDE SHUT from The library of my soul, United KingdomMy word, that's amazing. We simply cannot contemplate such snowfall over here. If we get a little dusting of the white stuff, our schools close, trains grind to a halt and the country descends into utter chaos. We're having a cold snap, -10 at night, and some snow on the way. I'd just like enough to allow the making of snowmen and a few good snowball fights with the neighbours and familiy ha ha 6 Jan 2009 5:16pm Steve Rice from Olympia, United StatesThat is simply too much snow unless you are at ski lodge or some such place. Ours is all but gone with a few lingering piles here and there. But, the rains are coming so I don't know what will happen over your way. I hate to even think of trying to drive in all that white stuff. 6 Jan 2009 5:25pm Suzanne from Huntington Bch, United StatesIncredible. I just returned from 3 weeks in our local mountains. I just can't comprehend how a large city can function with that much snow. I hope you have snowshoes. 6 Jan 2009 6:49pm Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomSo whatever happened to Global warming, heatwaves and droughts...? 7 Jan 2009 1:47am One from Açores, PortugalAn exceptional snowfall !!! Ours was melting off in a hurry today and everything is soggy because there is no place for the water to go. My son in CdA is a happy camper - he went snowboarding yesterday! 7 Jan 2009 3:27am Inés from Namur, BelgiumCool, c'est un peu la même chose chez nous, c'est chouette de retrouver un vrai hiver ! 7 Jan 2009 7:43am grouser from Ludlow, United KingdomGreat stuff Don and good weather report too. 7 Jan 2009 11:43am |
